Colsen Recalls Nearly 90,000 Tabletop Fire Pits Due to Serious Burn Hazards

Colsen has issued a recall for nearly 90,000 tabletop fire pits after reports of serious burn injuries caused by flames shooting from the devices. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a recall notice detailing the potential dangers associated with the Colsen-branded fire pits, which are designed to burn liquid alcohol.

The recall highlights a “flame jetting” hazard that can occur when users refill the container, potentially leading to fire flashbacks that propel burning alcohol from the unit. As alcohol flames can be nearly invisible, the risk of spills or leaks during use can create dangerous flash fires. The CPSC warns that such incidents can cause burns in less than one second, resulting in serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.

To date, the CPSC has received 31 reports of flame jetting or flames escaping from the fire pits, leading to 19 reported burn injuries. Among these injuries, two victims suffered third-degree burns affecting more than 40% of their bodies. Several incidents required surgical intervention, prolonged medical treatment, and may have resulted in permanent disfigurement.

The CPSC, along with Miami-based Colsen, advises consumers to immediately stop using the fire pits and dispose of them safely. It is illegal to resell or donate the recalled products. However, consumers should note that refunds are not avail8able, as Colsen stated it lacks the financial resources to offer a remedy and ceased sales of the fire pits one year after acquiring the product line.

The recall affects approximately 89,500 fire pits sold at major retailers such as Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart, and Sharper Image, as well as through social media platforms like TikTok and Meta-owned applications from January 2020 through July 2024. The recall encompasses seven different models of the fire pits, which varied in size, shape, and color, with retail prices ranging from $40 to $90.

In a statement on its website, Colsen emphasized its commitment to safety, stating that it is launching this recall in conjunction with the CPSC due to the serious safety concerns identified.
