Tom Brady’s Raiders Ownership Approved by NFL Owners

ATLANTA — Tom Brady has officially added another role to his impressive football resume: owner.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion has been approved by NFL team owners to purchase a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders. This news comes after a 17-month process that saw some hurdles over concerns about Brady’s involvement with the team.

Brady, who played 23 seasons in the NFL with the Patriots and Buccaneers, will now have 5% control of the Raiders. The deal needed 24 out of 32 votes from NFL owners to pass. The approval comes with some stipulations: Brady is not permitted to play football again unless he relinquishes his ownership stake.

While the deal was initially agreed upon in May 2023, there were concerns about a possible discount on the stake and potential conflicts of interest related to Brady’s role as a broadcaster with Fox.

The NFL has placed restrictions on Brady to mitigate these concerns. He cannot attend production meetings in person or virtually, and he cannot have access to team facilities, players, or coaching staff. However, he is permitted to broadcast Raiders games. Additionally, he must adhere to the league’s constitution and bylaws, which prohibit public criticism of officials and other clubs.

This move marks Brady’s second foray into sports ownership, as he also holds a minority stake in the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, which are owned by Raiders majority owner Mark Davis.

Joining Brady in his new ownership role is Pro Football Hall of Famer Richard Seymour, who played with Brady in New England. Seymour also received approval from NFL owners to purchase a minority stake in the Raiders.

Brady and Seymour become the third and fourth former NFL players to become owners, following in the footsteps of George Halas Sr. and Jerry Richardson.

The Raiders haven’t won a Super Bowl since capturing their third title in 1983. They are aiming to bring another championship to Las Vegas after their move to the city in 2020.
